Small Spaces: Dark vs. Light

Common thought is that a small space should be painted a light color so as to make it feel bigger. Is this fact or fiction? Well, it depends on the circumstance. As designers, we love a bold and dramatic space, even in a bathroom. Hey, for a rental, it showed some flair. (I'm a green person, not a blue person.) I initially decided to keep the color - it was bold and very different for me, which  I thought would be fun. Plus, bathrooms are a PIA to paint. A friend who came with me the first time I looked at it has since said he thought the bathroom was teeny tiny, but realized it's not so bad. I think it's that the lower corners aren't cloaked in shadow anymore. My color palette throughout is pink, beige and green, with touches of black, so this fits in well. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the window yet - maybe a grass shade hung above for texture. There aren't privacy issues (unless someone wants to get a ladder) and the window lets in lots of light, which is nice. Or, I'll just take of the existing hardware and be done with it.  If I owned I'd definitely replace the light fixture for something more upscale - and maybe I still will at some point. I was going to have my painter relocate the toilet roll holder, but there's not really a better spot. The shower is on the other side of the toilet and there is no available wall space there. Still to come - window treatment (possibly) and a shower curtain. Maybe some more art. <br /><br />So, do you have a preference? Nook Cottage: All moved in!

It's been a whirlwind few days as you can imagine - moving out and moving in. I really don't like the moving process. Packing things then unpacking them a few days later isn't like opening presents. But still, I had the help of the wonderful White Glove Moving & Storage in Bourne, MA who were charming and strong! And polite, even when I told them near the end of the truck loading that I was taking the two large (and heavy!) oriental rugs. They earned their money that day.<br /><br />The outside of my new little cottage needs some work. Its a rental so I'm not going to be doing anything major. But it needs some cuteness and I'll show that soon. My new book!

Sorry for the bloggy silence. I don't know if I've shared this before, I can't remember, but I have been working on a book! I was hired to do the 6th edition revision and update for the longstanding book "How to Start a Home Based Interior Design Business" published by Globe Pequot Press. I believe I'd bought the 2nd edition back when I opened my business in 2002. Anyway, it's a handy "how-to" manual, one of a long list of similar books for various industries. Today was my submission deadline and I just sent it in an hour ago! What a relief. With everything else going on - selling my family house, moving and decorating my new house, not to mention keeping Mr. RoyRoy sane and entertained through it all - I've had a lot on my plate. Nook Cottage: Bedroom paint selection

The bedroom is currently beige, which will not do! One thing that is very important to realize is that a photograph taken on an iPhone, then uploaded and shown on different screens will not render the paper paint chip color in the same way it does the fabric color. I thought I had one picked out, but it's no longer in production and the alternative they sent doesn't work.
