It is always inspiring to experience the show through the eyes of the designers/bloggers both on the BLANCO Design Council and with the <a href="http://www.modenus.com/" target="_blank">Modenus</a> BlogTour who met up with us for press events. Out of the hundreds of photos we took - these are curated by trend including reclaimed wood looks in cabinets + tiles, grey colors, a stunning architectural sink design called MODEX by BLANCO plus pure white design for appliance + cabinets. Everywhere we looked, there were smart phones, tablets and remote controls. For instance, ink jet printing is providing limitless opportunity for design customization and to reinvent organic themes such as wood and marble. Thin tile offers large wall and floor formats and new dimensional shapes. Eco-friendly advances include recycled tile, tile that absorbs pollution or tile that provides an energy efficient surface that’s warm to the touch. <br /><br />Last week's two hour event was packed with information not only from the manufacturers themselves – but also award winning architecture from Spanish architect Ángela García de Paredes – Principal, Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos, Madrid, Spain that demonstrated how material and nature are important design considerations. Dr. Martin Bechthold – Professor of Architectural Technology/ Group Head, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University shed light on integrating robotic technology into fabrication and construction processes, developing advanced material systems and understanding problems of lifecycle design. Andie Day, local designer/blogger moderated a lively design forum where architects and designers could ask the speakers specific questions regarding their projects. 2011 New York Fall Tabletop Show

The show is only open to the media, retail buyers and interior designers as many of the new introductions haven’t even been produced yet and won’t be in stores  - well, until a store commits to purchasing them. The fun part about visiting these showrooms is that you get a glimpse – a whole year in advance – of what the latest tabletop colors, fashions and concepts will be. Hampton is known for its accessible price points and the new Signature and Argent collections indicate another trend. Consumers want value – but they won’t part with their dollars for something cheap. These textured collections put something more in your hand. It’s striking retro 50’s and 60’s design features basic cylindrical forms that offer purposeful function. I’m very much into the whole Pan Am, Mad Men vibe and these curvy trays make me crave highballs and happy hours. It’s also nice to see a design that can live in a masculine or feminine world. Many of the patterns at the Fall Tabletop show have pulled back on frills since men do take an active part in the registry experience. The new Melrose Collection incorporates popular paisley and Jacobean design elements in deep rich reds and purples. Laurie tells us that paisley is considered a sign of fertility. So aspiring grandparents take note! Five Trends to Watch at the 2011 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS)

But traffic and designer interest was brisk for the exhibitors present – hopefully a positive sign for the future. KBIS is one of my favorite shows. Homeowners really invest in their kitchens and KBIS is the place to see what’s new, what’s trending and where the kitchen of the future is going. You can’t get more personal than that! Me – I like the big cubes in my water. But if someone needs them small and chewy – this would be the system for them. Plasmacluster technology cleans the air with antibacterial ions. Never mind its advanced flushing technology, green features and sophisticated design. So when I was asked would I pay $4,800 for a luxury spa toilet, my answer was simple, “it shuts the seat?” Worth the price of admission for me!<br /><br />My kids did ask if it knows to open for a boy or a girl. Plain and simple. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.pasadenashowcase.org/">The Pasadena Showcase House</a>, a non-profit organization based in California chooses a home for an indoor, and outdoor makeover every year and the results are well, pretty amazing. Everything planted was either edible or medicinal with a just a few exceptions. All the products we used were either recycled or recyclable or at least environmentally friendly. <a href="http://www.outdoorkitchensbyatlantis.com/">Atlantis Outdoor Kitchens</a> supplied the cabinetry and appliances and I used as many local products and suppliers as possible including local lumber yard, local garden nurseries, etc. <br /><a href="http://gallery.me.com/ldolnick/100710/LA%20Showhouse_4/web.jpg?ver=12893349230001" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://gallery.me.com/ldolnick/100710/LA%20Showhouse_4/web.jpg?ver=12893349230001" width="640" /></a><br />LD: What was the most challenging in terms of trying to create a fun but useful place? <br /><br />JL: I wanted to create something that was fun and exciting, yet functional. Keeping in mind ways for families and friends to entertain and at the same time being able to enjoy some private time - which is why I added the Martini sink so you can just relax in your own yard sipping away on a Martini.<br /><br />We build a deck for ultimate family dinners and a bar for those special social nights with friends or neighbors. It’s very cool because the deck is built over the roots of a Liquid Amber tree that adds a natural shade canopy. I also designed the retractable awning - each panel pulls on and off separately using a very low energy “pole” so you just hook the pole in a ring and pull! <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://gallery.me.com/ldolnick/100710/LA%20Showhouse_6/web.jpg?ver=12893348940001" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://gallery.me.com/ldolnick/100710/LA%20Showhouse_6/web.jpg?ver=12893348940001" width="426" /></a></div><br />I also finished off the space bringing all the elements of the wood and glass together using recycled glass as accents in all the candle holders, teak on the hand rail, natural stones and crystals (a passion of mine) were dotted around the entire space and a couple of whimsical elements, like the “moon gazing hares,” were also added.<br /><br />LD: Sounds like you had the “Go Green” effect in mind when planning the space. <br /><br />JL: I did actually. The planters are all edible, herbal or medicinal including tomatoes, grape vines, etc. We added small planters around the space to show people how they could have an herb garden in a small space – and it is visually appealing as well. <br /><br />LD:  Well, you did an amazing job this year. Any idea of what visitors can expect next year? <br /><br />JD: Not sure yet. The Sink Fits The Project<br />“I want the sink to fit the project. I do not have a one-size-fits-all sink in mind when I design,” says Cheryl Kees Clendenon, owner/designer <a href="http://www.kitchendetailsanddesign.com/">In Detail Kitchen and Bath</a>, Pensacola, Florida. Cheryl likes the deeper 10” or more sinks. “I can tell you what I think is a ridiculous size, the sinks where you have the tiny bowl on one side that is quite shallow. I think this is nuts because people put their disposal on the shallow small side,” comments Clendenon.<br /><br />2. Accessories<br />According to designers, like Cheryl Kees Clendenon, sink grids for protecting stainless are a must!!<br /><br />3. Pay a little more<br />“As far as product selections go, I think you truly get what you pay for when it comes to faucets,” states Nick Bajzek, <a href="http://www.housingzone.com/index.asp?layout=blogs">The Product Guy</a> (product editor for Professional Builder, Professional Remodeler and Custom Builder magazines). Spend a little extra and go for a higher-end model, one with a quality cartridge. You generally won’t have to worry about leaks or wearing out the knobs like you would with a cheap faucet.”<br /><br />4. Material Matters<br />“What I look for when I’m specifying a sink is the material,” states Paul Anater, blogger and designer at <a href="http://www.kitchenandresidentialdesign.com/">http://www.kitchenandresidentialdesign.com/</a>. “I have a strong preference for stainless steel, so that’s where I go first. Once I have a client sold on stainless I look for a single bowl, large sink. If I have the budget, I spec flat-bottomed sinks because I think they look better. If I can’t afford a flat bottom, I then look for the heaviest gauge steel I can find that will fit into my budget. Once I have my sink options narrowed down, I then look for other features such as accessories. Brand name doesn’t figure into it nearly as much as quality and I never shop by price. I set a budget for my clients and then we go find the best we can find in that budget. <a href="http://www.blancoamerica.com/home.php">BLANCO</a> rises to the top in many cases I’m pleased to report.”<br /><br />5. Durability Now! Painless Later.<br />“When I’m asked to consult on which kitchen sink a client should choose I usually suggest they go for excellent durability and great looks,” says Gerry Snapke of<a href="http://cadkitchenplans.com/blog"> CadKitchenPlans.com</a>. “It’s no secret that the drop in sink has been out of favor in the kitchen for many years now. Under mount sinks and farmhouse apron fronts make up the bulk of styles popular with consumers and they look great. But consider what replacing one of these sinks involves. If it’s an under mount style replacement is difficult without replacing or at least doing major damage to the existing countertop. Farmhouse sinks pose a similar replacement challenge and often times involve cabinet modification as well. Being part of the design world, I have that moment all the time. Every time I go to a trade show, showroom event or client new product brief, I see or hear some tidbit that makes me want to rip out my walls and start over again. I named this story, “stuff I wish my designer told me,” because designers do have a universe of knowledge inside their heads, but they don’t always remember to share. And they can’t be clairvoyant either – knowing you’ll want something that you don’t even know exists. Here’re five of my moments in hopes that we catch you before you can hit yourself in the head. <br /><div style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">According to <a href="http://www.topknobsusa.com/">Top Knobs</a>, a fine cabinet hardware company, what’s old is new again. Many of yesterday’s styles are today’s hottest. Their new bath hardware line offers six interchangeable back plates that change the look of a hook, tissue holder or other piece of hardware by sliding a uniquely styled plate beneath. The back plate lets you match not only the finish – but also the style of the hardware to your faucets and other fixtures. Makes me just want to take a screwdriver to my downstairs bathroom when I see that while I neatly matched the finishes of my hardware on my last DIY makeover – I neglected to match the architectural styles completely. (Another tidbit I just learned – look for knobs like Top Knobs with sealed finishes. A sealed finish won’t show wear from hand oils where a “living finish” will. Ok – she’s young, she has no kids… did I say no kids? How many dented stainless dishwashers have you seen in your friend’s kitchens? Unfortunately many kitchen designers, unless they have children of their own, won’t see their once pristine dishwashers – now dented by toddlers who fling themselves at top speed into their shiny surfaces. Thank goodness manufacturers like <a href="http://www.miele.com">Miele</a> offer integrated models. I worked with my designer upfront to change the stainless to a cabinet wood door and I’m so glad I did. Dented wood offers character. The shape and the depth. (Depth is really important. Another tidbit - make sure your watering cans and big pots sit comfortably in your new sink so you can fill them without tipping them out.) But then <a href="http://www.blancoamerica.com/">BLANCO</a> showed me their new SILGRANIT II line and SIGH… that head slap moment again. Here’s a stone composite you can’t scratch, stain or dent. Given my overall clumsiness and affinity for heavy iron skillets – this would have been nice to have known before the stainless sink was spec’d in. And I love that you can have a sink in a natural stone color. It’s warm and inviting.<br /><br />Don’t settle for less than a flush transition from one room’s flooring to another. Don’t let the floor company lazily dump an ugly metal piece in between. Flush transitions are do-able and they take that “accident-waiting-to-happen” piece of metal or wood out of the picture completely. I think we had to do like three floors before we pushed to get this done right. We have an oak floor flush to our walnut without a rise or transition on three sides and it looks beautiful. <br /><br />When we did our treated wood deck, I had no idea companies like <a href="http://www.trex.com/">Trex</a> or <a href="http://www.outdoorkitchensbyatlantis.com/">Atlantis Outdoor Kitchens</a> even existed. If only I knew then what I know now. Composite decking does have its issues, but the saving in having to treat and stain the wood deck every couple years would have been worth the added expense upfront. Not to mention the absence of splinters. I’m also intrigued by the advent of outdoor kitchens in recent years. And I may upgrade to a kitchen instead of a grill on my next go-around. Atlantis offers easy-to-clean Perma Panel doors that resist heat and cold and they would neatly offer storage and convenience for outdoor grilling.
