The Skirted Roundtable with Nathan Turner

This week on The Skirted Roundtable, we chat with LA based interior designer Nathan Turner. Okay, we actually chatted with him last month, but I had the slows and didn't get around to editing the podcast till this week - bad blogger, bad!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2012-10-25-NT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2012-10-25-NT.jpg" /></a></div><br /><br />Anyway, Nathan is truly one of the most refreshing and delightful people I've spoken with. I interviewed him on ::Surroundings:: last year via podcast (<a href="http://chameleon-interiors.blogspot.com/2011/07/million-dollar-decorators-chatting-with.html" target="_blank">listen here</a>) when he was a regular cast member on Season 1 of Bravo TV's Million Dollar Decorators. I was disappointed that he was not going to be a regular on Season 2 of the show because he added such a refreshing calm to the proceedings - kind of like a nice palette cleansing sorbet. He still shows up to hang out with his bestie Mary McDonald, so we do get a little of him. Million Dollar Decorators: Drama in 1% ville

Since Season 1 aired well over a year ago,we in the US have experienced the boisterousness of the #OccupyWallStreet movement, the 1% and the 47%, the "You didn't build that" moment, class divisions, super storm Sandy, and at long last, the elections. So tuning into MDD to watch vast sums of money be spent on pure decoration is both annoying and pleasantly diverting. As a designer, I certainly can't pretend I'm not in the business of helping clients spend more money on their homes than the average person in America does, but I'm also a big believer that they have worked hard and it's theirs to spend as they wish. And my job is to not only provide beautiful design work but also to help my clients make the best financial choices as well. <br/><br/>Okay, so back to Million Dollar Decorators, this weeks episode focused mainly on designers Mary McDonald and Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Kathryn Ireland and her hysterical French housekeeper Jacqueline spent the episode tasting (and by tasting I mean swilling) wine, flirting with a wine tasting guy (Jacqueline) and getting massages that are better than sex (Kathryn). We also had a brief and apparently drunken moment with Jeffrey Alan Marks and Ross Cassidy as Ross blathered on about ice cream and where to eat it. Am detecting a trend - it's MDD, the binge drinking years! <br/><br/><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/chameleon-interiors/8184381840/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="558" id="blogsy-1352874737173.0706" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8066/8184381840_7a1094fe4f.jpg" width="788"></a></div> So, Mary worked her magic on a bland guest house for a client who couldn't make up her mind, or remember what she decided on regarding the decorations. Expensive grass cloth wallpaper was in process of being hung when the client demanded that it be removed, even tho she choose it. Actually, this brought up a standard issue between designer and client. Always get written client sign off on all decisions made before sending money. If the client changes their mind, they are clearly responsible. The second important concept is thst it's better for the client to see the entire project installed all at once versus piece by piece delivery. Seeing it all together presents the designer's whole vision for the space. The space itself came out beautifully (these pics from Bravo's site don't do it justice) with lots of natural elements, texture, and a serene color palette. <br/><br/><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/chameleon-interiors/8184345127/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="390" id="blogsy-1352874737098.7427" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8204/8184345127_5fc8680f97.jpg" width="799"></a></div> Meanwhile, in NYC, Martyn was discovering the joys of working in old buildings here in the Northeast. Small freight elevators, narrow stairs and busy streets make for fun obstacles when an over scale marble table (3000 lbs) needs to be craned into place. <br/><br/><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/chameleon-interiors/8184382660/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="358" id="blogsy-1352874737088.1719" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8341/8184382660_502fff9cc3.jpg" width="650"></a></div> So Martyn designed this fabulous marble dining table for Jimmy Choo's Tamara Mellon (who made an appearance last season) but didn't think about the weight and size and how it was going to get into place. Drama ensued, likely a few bribes were made, and the table was successfully craned in. The dining room design - an homage to Tamara's love of the 1970's - featured red walls, lacquered ceiling, chrome, white marble, a fabulous black and white chevron hide rug from Kyle Bunting and pretty awful sounding black patent leather drapery. The fireplace surround guy went missing (along with $10,000) - not sure how that was resolved. Tamara was happy with the space - patent leather curtains and all - saying it looked like "Scarface". Martyn modestly proclaimed the dining room would be a legend. <br/><br/>So, that's episode one. They've been previewing what looks like a cat fight between Mary and Kathryn - so that should be fun. I do think I'll miss Nathan Turner who isn't back as a regular cast member this season, but I think I saw him in a preview, so he must be making an appearance at some point. We do have Kathryn Ireland, Mary McDonald, Jeffrey Alan Marks (with his trusted-to-be-shirtless sidekick Ross Cassidy) and Martyn Lawrence Bullard - talented designers all. But Nathan brought out the soul of season 1 and if their preview is any indication, S2 is likely to be drama drama all the time. Typical Bravo reality b.s. I liked S1 a lot - while there were big egos and drama, there was some real decorating, insight into dealing with clients, and how genuinely friendly the LA design scene can seem. This clip looks like they've thrown that concept "under the bus" (to employ an overused reality show saying) and possibly each other. We'll see. Okay, it's not a return, per se, but nearly the entire cast got together and made a video in support of a candidate for the Michigan Supreme Court and her fight to get voters to realize that beyond the Dem and Rep sides of the ballots, thirteen states have a section for non-partisan elections, such as the Michigan Supreme Court election.  Not many local election candidates can muster the power of the presidency (albeit a fantasy one) to help get out the word, but this one has a sister in very high places. Before Kathryn, actor/director Harold Ramis lived there, and starting it all was famed architect Wallace Neff, who built it in the first place as a barn in the 1920s. In the 1940's architect Austen Pierpoint converted it to a house. <br /><br />It's really fascinating to see the changes this one property has undergone, and now we get to see how Miss Reese has made it her own. When we interviewed Kathryn on <a href="http://skirtedroundtable.blogspot.com/2010/12/kathryn-m-ireland-visits-skirted.html" target="_blank">The Skirted Roundtable</a> last year, she told us that Reese had purchased the house AND all its contents. I believe that Kathryn used this space off the kitchen for comfortable seating and had a smaller kitchen table in the kitchen as you can see below. The floors match. I wonder if they closed this off from the kitchen, somehow? From the chair in the foreground, you can see how open this sitting area is to the kitchen. Which do you think works best with the original architecture of the house? My personal opinion is that I am visually drawn to the updated space, but think I'd have been more comfortable hanging out in Kathryn's space, which feels more welcoming. In fact, both designs totally reflect their owners. This isn't "Housewives of the blah blah blah", however. The MDD cast are people who are friends and colleagues who respect one another and often go to each other for advice. In truth, their design styles and personalities are all so entirely different (excellent casting) that it makes for a lot of fun television watching, especially for interior design professionals. We see these "design stars" whose work appears in major magazines and in books dealing with all the same issues we do - clients not listening, nerves about how the client will like a plan or the final outcome, keeping within a budget. While they may suggest that these are no budget, do what you want type decorators, they all still have to work within certain parameters. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Nestled among the bold personalities is the one quiet one - <a href="http://nathanturner.com/">Nathan Turner</a>. Unfortunately, he hasn't gotten the screen time that the others have, which is typical of reality tv. Nathan has a quiet, laid back demeanor that is easily overlooked what with Kathryn flashing her boobs, Ross flipping his hair, Mary tossing off the witty bon mots, Jeffrey's sneering and Martyn's name dropping. I do hope that there will be more screen time in the last few episodes for Nathan. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Meanwhile, he was kind enough to sit down for an interview where we talked about his career, the show and what he would, and would not do, for the cameras. They risk looking unprofessional, ungrateful and unkempt. On the other hand, how many of us, when under considerable stress, would look and act great with cameras trailing around after us 100% of the time? When I blogged on Bravo's Top Design, the designers on those shows had relatively little public profile - the were all professionals, but not quite big names either. Twitter and FB didn't play a big role, but this time, the people tweeting and commenting are a highly professional and dedicated group of professional designers (some with as big, or bigger careers than those on the show). And, the initial commentary is a very mixed bag indeed.  Many negative comments were flying via public tweet and private message. These shows are produced because they are dramatic and there's big business in drama. Mix the drama with celebrity (Sharon Osborn plays a big role in epi 1) and million dollar budgets and <a href="http://www.bravotv.com/million-dollar-decorators/season-1/videos/coming-up-in-the-premiere-season">BravoTV</a> is in pig heaven. Professional designers all seem a bit leary - will this make the rest of us look bad? Will the long held negative stereotypes of our industry (stereotypes regarding blown budgets, overbearing decorators and clients not getting what they want) be reinforced? Or, will we see real people, warts and all, just trying to satisfy a demanding clientele? After all, Sharon O seemed completely unfazed at making Martyn Lawrence Bullard completely decorate a new apartment in a matter of days. And, one wonders, what other client's work was pushed aside in order to accomplish this feat? Time will tell.
