DIY It: Making a gorgeous lawn ornament for the holidays

My friend, children's book author and illustrator <a href="http://www.brianlies.com/" target="_blank">Brian Lies</a>, is sharing with us a great project he did last year that turned into this gorgeous, huge, yard ornament for the holiday season.  Brian is a very handy guy and there's not much he can't MacGyver.<br /><br />Usually I don't post holiday - meaning Christmas-ish - topics this early in the season (hello Halloween!) but if this is something you'd like to try, you're going to want to collect your materials now while doing your Fall yard cleanup. (Question - do those in warm climates have Fall yard cleanups to do?). text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: AvenirNext-Regular;"><span style="color: #38761d;">Seems like most people have a string or two of unused Christmas lights around, and I wound several strings around the vines, attaching the strings with florist’s wire as I went.  When I was done, I had a lighted orb—nearly three feet across—which we placed in our front yard, and moved around every few days.  The good thing is that the orb is still in great shape after a year in the garage—the vines dried out into their now spherical shape.  As long as I don’t crush it, we’ll have it to use for at least several years.</span></span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; As I've been sorting through my parent's files, I came across two items of great family importance. My Grandmother died only 6 months after my parent's married, and my Grandfather just two years after that. While he always seemed a bit of a curmudgeon from stories I'd heard, it's clear his heart ran deep and my romantic notion that he died of a broken heart seems to be backed up by this letter. Also in the envelope was a gold bracelet and a red/white/blue striped ribbon - perhaps they met on July 4th? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My Dad was quite an archivist and a romantic as well. He kept so many treasures, including a cache of the letters my Mom sent him when she traveled to Europe for six weeks in the summer of 1953. She'd saved for years for this tour of Europe, but her letters are peppered with her wishes for the trip to be over and how she'd be the first one off the gang plank upon her return. How cool would it have been to have both sides of  their long-distance conversation? They'd only known each other for 3  months when she was setting sail and became engaged before the trip - he  wanted to lock her down before some European Lothario got hold of her.  Reading these letters, I found out that the engagement was actually  secret - at least from friends. She kept begging him not to spill the beans till she got home.  I'm assuming their parents all knew, but  who knows...? There may be more letters in his files that I haven't  come across yet. There were stories of a drunken letter she sent while  drinking chianti in the hotel room during a very rainy day in Venice. He  always teased that her handwriting from good to illegible. Now they are saying a blizzard is coming for the afternoon/evening... I've canceled my last two day's plans due to weather. Danvers Historical Society Designer Holiday Show House

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.danvershistory.org/images/gm_wisteria.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="http://www.danvershistory.org/images/gm_wisteria.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"> Endicott Manstion at Glen Magna Farms in summer (photo courtesy of Danvers Historical Society)</span></div><br />Contrary to what is the normal holiday show house, the <a href="http://www.danvershistory.org/" target="_blank">Danvers Historical Society</a> show this year was a real designer showhouse where the professional designers not only added some holiday flair to the space, but also truly designed their rooms from floors to ceilings. The location for this year's show house was the Endicott mansion at Glen Magna Farms, which is a popular destination for weddings. I attended a wedding their many years ago. The grounds are beautiful in season, but also on a snowy winter's day like the one we had the day I was there.  The Danvers Historial society is renovating the mansion, ground and the famous Derby Summer House. At 20 x 40, this was a massive undertaking which gave Donna a chance to showcase her deep knowledge of Art Deco style as well as her background in set design. Newburyport Holiday House Tour 2013

Okay, so most of us have our holiday decorations packed away and are a tad sick of the whole thing, but since this is the Feast of the Epiphany, aka Twelfth Night, I thought I could squeeze in my visit to the Newburyport Holiday House Tour from a few weeks ago.<br /><br />I only made it to a handful of houses, but they were pretty great.<br /><br />This first is from a new home that was built in the Georgian style. (Sadly I didn't think to take a photo of the exterior.) I loved how their cute little wreath decorations didn't obscure the amazing carved staircase. The original builder was a ship owner, so his ship's carpenters may have worked on the house in their off time.
