Bold backdrops

I've long wanted to do a bold mural or wallpaper background in a space - either my own or a client's. I seriously considered doing something here at Nook Cottage, but I have a lot of art to hang and not a lot of wall space, so the mural concept hasn't come to fruition. In some cases they are the true focal point of the design and in others, they ground the space. You can use real art, paint a mural, wallpaper murals or photo murals - there are so many options and resources available. Some are listed above in the credits. Transition spaces are tricky in show houses (really, any house) because as a designer, you want to make an impression on visitors and you only have a second to do so. When I visited the house, I thought that the wallpaper Cecelia had used, Graham & Brown's <a href="http://www.grahambrown.com/us/product/30-424/Sherwood+Grey+wallpaper" target="_blank">Sherwood Gray</a>, was visually interesting without being overdone. As we all know, small bathrooms are a great place to experiment with bold pattern and I'm excited that the client is on board with adding a little wow factor into the space. I've narrowed down the selections to a general "tree" theme in blacks, whites and grays. This is part of a rural farmhouse addition, so we're a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, as Donnie and Marie would say. The O&L papers have too much metallic shine to them. I love the Designer's Guild paper - it looks totally hand sketched. And I love the Graham & Brown for the color contrast. The Alpha Workshops for Thibaut

Oy, sometimes, things do get buried, don't they?<br /><br />Anyway, the wallpaper samples are from Thibaut's newly released papers made in conjunction with The Alpha Workshops called <a href="http://www.thibautdesign.com/collection/room_photo.php?id=87" target="_blank">Artisan</a>. The papers, and the story behind them, are pretty fantastic. <br /><br />[via Thibaut's website] Founded in 1995, The Alpha Workshops is the only not-for-profit organization in the country that trains and employs people who are living with HIV/AIDS in the decorative arts. The Alpha Workshops has been an industy pioneer, developing a unique training curriculum within a flexible setting and providing a supportive workplace that is responsive to the medical, financial and emotional needs of people living with chronic illness.<br /><br />Decorative arts classes are taught at The Alpha Workshops studio School, which is licensed by the New York State Department of Education. The Alpha Workshops also runs a highly regarded design studio, staffed completely by artisans who have graduated from the school's advanced program. The studios are well-known for hand-painted wallpapers, on-site custom painting and venetian plaster, decorative finishes, gilding, hand-cast lamps and site-specific artwork.<br /><br />The collaboration between Thibaut and Alpha utilizes the best talents of both companies to create Artisan, a bold and inspiring new wallpaper collection. For Thibaut, the license with Alpha presented an opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the creators of Alpha's designs to shape their new interpretation. The artisans of Alpha recognized that in Thibaut, they had a partner who could skillfuly capture the handmade quality of their designs and translate them into a widely available product.
