A decent rug - which should be hand knotted for the best quality - is not inexpensive.  However, a good quality rug can last decades even with a lot of wear and tear. My mother has a rug in her dining room that is  at least 75 years old (it was from my grandparent's house) and it shows little wear even though it gets daily use.  A beautiful carpet is a functional work of art and truly sets the stage for a finished room.<br /><br />I was excited when <a href="http://www.medallionrug.com/" target="_blank">Medallion Rug Gallery</a> in Palo Alto, CA contacted me and offered me a rug to test out their services and see the quality of their products. Making a large purchase online can be daunting, particularly when color is so important to the look. After doing a little reconnaissance (I checked online reviews on Yelp, etc, to make sure they are a decent company to work with)  I accepted their offer. Since it's understood that I'd be writing a post about my experience, I didn't want to be in a position of being polite because they sent me a rug, or being negative (my policy is to rarely go negative here on the blog). Anyway, I was happy with the general tone of their reviews, so after searching through their literally thousands and thousands of rugs online, I settled on this pretty Sultanbad style rug with pinks and greens on a cream ground. Pretty much my favorite color combination. The rug arrived very quickly (they offer free shipping - in both directions) - all 67 pounds of it! It was very well wrapped. The rug was actually a bit darker than I expected (the colors are spot on, just darker)  - which is a good lesson to learn. Product photography is usually very well lit and many products look lighter than they may appear in real life. For my purposes, I was okay with it being a bit darker, but I asked the folks at Medallion about how they handle situations like this. For instance, I asked if they send additional photography upon request - which they will do. A digital photo from the showroom or warehouse (vs. professionally lit and shot image) would have probably shown it was darker. So, for now, I've put it in the living room until I can move it to the bedroom. You can see in the montage how pretty the rug is. I love the pattern and in a brighter room (this is north facing and always dark while my bedroom is always bright (even with mid-toned green walls). I put my Sultanbad green and pink rug into my design studio/home office and think it works really well. I'm still working on the actual design of the home office, which is in the back of the house, but this is essentially the layout. There is a separate entrance leading right into this room from the side of the house. I would be able to meet with client's here, show them plans, etc. The walls would be used as pin boards. The sliding doors on the right would be pocket doors and have either etched glass or mirrored windows so the room could be a real working space without being visible to the formal library. It's not much further along than before, other than I pushed the office walls in two -feet since the office needed more space.  And I added this gorgeous deep green Persian Tabriz rug. The home office is on the other side of the double doors (pay no attention to the missing window mullions - rendering glitch!) As I said above, the plan is that this room would house all my books and materials in a combination of open and covered storage and double as an intimate dining room. I decided that rather than have a wood burning traditional fireplace, which takes up a lot of room, I'd do a gas fireplace mounted at eye level on the wall. Cozy, but easy to deal with. Double Duty: Dining Rooms and?

Linda's Dream House: 2nd Floor Plan and Master Bathroom Design

I finally got the 2nd floor plan nailed down - I think!  Not surprisingly, I wanted to have a fabulous master (mistress?) bedroom suite, but also wanted decent guest rooms. The software I use - Live Interior 3D Pro for Mac - doesn't generate really fantastic floor plans. The grayed out lines are the first floor walls. There is some kind of glitch that forces the upstairs to be slightly smaller than downstairs on three sides and I just don't know why. Learning process.<br /><br />Anyway, as you can see, the master suite is on the back of the house. When I lived in Newburyport (the future location of my fictional dream house) I lived on High St, which is the main drag through town. Loved the street - but it is noisy. Since all the houses sit right at the street, the master in the back is preferable. My condo's master was in the front, but after a while, I moved to the smaller back bedroom to get away from the street noise. In order to get everything in, I've ended up with an upstairs hall that has no direct natural light, which bothers me, but I'm not sure how to avoid it. Light would come up the stair well from the front hall and the stairs to the attic would be open and I think I'd want to try to force some natural light down the stairs via sky lights in the attic. The space behind the stairs is the chimney, which is why it's boxed in. <br /><br />I still have to work on making sure all the doors are at least 3' wide since I'm trying to maintain as much universal design principal as possible. Since this is a plan for me, I'm considering the fact that if I were to build it (sponsors anyone? lol) I'd want to be here the rest of my life. So, I am in fact planning room for the addition of an elevator in the rear of the house. It would be accessible from the back yard and garage, into the downstairs and then it would open on the 2nd floor in the hall between the master bedroom and bath. I also love that I am able to get a vanity table in with natural light. There would of course be window treatments, but I haven't gotten to those yet. I played around with the tub configuration quite a lot. I like the symmetry of the faucet being in the middle, but it's hard to reach across the span to use them. There is a niche in the rear wall for shampoo, etc. Ignore the fact that the glass shower walls and door are just floating - I know there would be hardware, but I'd want it as minimal as possible.  The door next to the shower would be a sliding door to the toilet closet. The opening is a linen closet. While I know I shouldn't get into too many fine decorative details while still figuring out floor plans, it's important to understand how someone will be living in the house, the size of furnishings, layouts, physical needs now and in the future, etc. Too often, houses are built without planning for real life needs and the rest just needs to be squeezed into the available spaces. For me, it's that feeling I get when I look at a space that just speaks to me on a really sub-conscious level. It's the colors, the textures, the overall feel. It's a kind of low-level vibration.  So, while this Chinese red and blue/white pottery design was ok, it's just not my room. Linda's Dream Home: the Three-Season Porch

Who doesn't love a window seat? They're so cute and cozy. They offer a chance for unabashed romance, comfort, sensuality and femininity - well, the good ones, anyway. They can be tucked out of the way, or play a prominent role in a room. The front parlor in my "house" is actually quite small - 12'x10'. It's truly meant to harken back to the era of these old New England houses with formal parlors where one greeted guests. I also love the idea of it being very "gardeny" in order to continue the "outside in" feeling from the green entry and muraled foyer.  Okay, I know I shouldn't be decorating before I've designed the entire house, but I just cannot help myself! But, pay little attention to what's on the walls, just place holders for now. This would probably be the basis for my entire design of this room. It hits all the right buttons for me. It's green (of course), feminine and it's a pattern whose layout creates a larger symmetrical pattern - perfection.
